2001 Outstanding National State School Nurse Consultant


Phyllis Lewis, Indiana

The National Association of State School Nurse Consultants, Inc. (NASSNC) in collaboration with Bayer Corporation has named Phyllis Lewis the recipient of the 2001 Outstanding State School Nurse Consultant Achievement Award. The award recognizes Phyllis as the state school nurse consultant who has demonstrated excellence in the role.

The selection criteria areas by which Phyllis was deemed to be outstanding included the following:

  • Has made outstanding contribution(s) to NASSNC;
  • Has served as a resource expert and catalyst from the state level for the development and implementation of policies and school health programs that promote, improve and/or maintain the well-being of students;
  • Has made significant contributions to overcoming barriers to the delivery of quality health care for school-age children and adolescents;
  • Has developed unique and worthwhile staff development programs for school nurses;
  • Has been actively involved in the development, interpretation and dissemination of relevant research data and other information which impacts the delivery of quality health and nursing services in the school setting; and
  • Has been actively involved in the development of important health policy, regulations or standards that affect the health of students and/or the practice of school nursing.

Phyllis will receive her award at the National Association of School Nurses annual conference in Phoenix, Arizona in June. She will also be recognized for receiving the Outstanding State School Nurse Consultant Achievement Award at the American School Health Association conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico in November.

Phyllis Lewis is an exemplar for nurses and for nursing. Her personal and professional accomplishments are stellar and distinguish her as an exceptional recipient of the Outstanding State School Nurse Consultant Achievement Award.
